Camera Thief Caught on Security Camera

CHULA VISTA, Calif. -- Police released a photograph Wednesday of a man suspected of stealing as many as 16 security cameras in the last two month.

The string of robberies began on Feb. 13, and most of them happened late at night or early in the morning, Chula Vista police Capt. Gary Wedge said.

The suspect, whose image was captured by one of the security cameras just before he took it, appears to be either Latino or Middle Eastern, 25-30 years old, 5 feet 8 inches to 5 feet 10 inches tall, with straight, short black hair, a short ponytail, and a thin mustache and goatee.

Among the targeted sites were a church, mortuary, pool-supply business, mobile home complex and several apartment complexes, Capt. Gary Wedge said. The cameras were worth between $200 and $1,000 each, he said.

Surveillance video from several of the thefts shows the suspect casing the locations where the cameras were located on a red, BMX-style bicycle.

Anyone with information about the thefts or the suspect should call Det. Ferko at 619-409-3875, or the Chula Vista Police Department at 619-691-5151.
