The Smoke Detector Hidden Camera is not for everyone. It has special requirements.
Just like all hidden cameras it does require power, but you also need access to above the ceiling for installation.
Applications where you have access to an unfinished attic, or ceiling tile is used is ideal. Usually a small hole in the ceiling is required.

Deluxe Smoke Detector

Hidden Video Camera in a real smoke detector housing. Ideal for over a cash register, view down hallways, motel lobbies, and the list goes on.
All Smoke Detectors are non-functioning. Once a camera and/or transmitter is installed inside a smoke detector the manufacturer warranty is void, thus these are all non-functioning.

All hidden cameras require power, including the smoke detector. You must be able to access your ceiling to connect power. The hard wired version will require you to run wire from the smoke detector all the way to your VCR. If you use the wireless version you can usually just run an extension cord to the top of ceiling where the detector is located and plug in the power adapter. These cannot be used with batteries unless you have access to locate a battery in top of ceiling. Depending on the battery you may attain 24 hours of operation.

Ceiling or wall mountable for best viewing angle. AC powered (included). Actual smoke detector may vary slightly from photo. Ideal for installation with ceiling tile or drop ceiling since a hole is required to run wire for power. The hard wired versions come with 25 ft. power video cable, and the wireless version come with AC power supplies for the smoke detector as well as the receiver.

Economy Smoke Detector

Side view Economy smoke detector. The 150 series is strictly a side view camera. Camera is positioned at 45 degrees--Smoke Detector does not actually work. Smoke detector only comes in a color hard wired version. AC adapter is included. Ideal for installation with ceiling tile, drop ceiling or anywhere a person can run wire for power behind the camera housing.

Camera can be powered by a power/video cable that must then be plugged into power and directly to your TV or VCR for viewing or recording.
